Riccioli, a renowned Bolognese astronomer and Jesuit, applied his scientific method to the humanities, offering a systematic set of rules, tables, and etymological references. The work was widely read in Jesuit and academic circles in the 17th and 18th centuries and is now considered one of the most important examples of Baroque philology in the field of linguistics. Giovanni Riccioli was one of the most important Jesuits and scientists of the 17th century: an astronomer, mathematician, and philologist. The Prosodia Bononiensis Reformata represents a milestone in the study of the Latin language in the Baroque era, with an almost encyclopedic methodology. The 1678 edition is posthumous and edited by the author's Jesuit brothers.
