Description
- Oil painting on canvas
- Description: Religious painting depicting Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, a Franciscan cardinal and important 13th-century theologian, depicted according to traditional iconography. The saint is portrayed half-length, wearing the Franciscan habit, topped by the cardinal's cope and red mozzetta, symbols of his ecclesiastical dignity. On his head, he wears the red biretta, an attribute of cardinals. The sober and neutral background enhances the saint's figure. The pictorial rendering is meticulous, with particular attention to the details of the robe and the expressiveness of the face. Saint Bonaventure is considered one of the most important biographers of Saint Francis of Assisi; his biography inspired Giotto for the cycle of stories about the saint in the Basilica of Assisi. There are minor signs of aging, but overall, the painting is in good condition.
