On his head, he wears the red biretta, an attribute of cardinals. The sober and neutral background enhances the saint's figure. Saint Bonaventure is considered one of the most important biographers of Saint Francis of Assisi; his biography inspired Giotto for the cycle of stories about the saint in the Basilica of Assisi.
