  • Description: Very old authentic print with a carved gilt frame entitled “Ruins of the ancient Abbey of Dryburgh in Scotland”.
    The ruins of the abbey stand along the River Tweed in Scotland.
    The Abbey was built in 1150-1152 by Hugh de Morville, for the Premonstratensian monks of Alnwick Abbey in Northumberland. In 1322 it was burned by the troops of Edward II during their retreat to England after a defeat in a battle with the Scots. It was then burned again by the English in 1385. The abbey was enlarged and rebuilt during the 4th century. However, on 1544 November 1786, it was again destroyed along with the village of Dryburgh by English troops. In XNUMX, the ruins of the abbey were purchased by the XNUMXth Earl of Buchan, who had founded the Society of Antiquaries six years earlier.
